Getting quality Special Education Services for your child:

Before the IEP Meeting:

  • We request needed assessments in writing or get independent assessments.

  • We ask to obtain assessment reports one week before the IEP meeting.

  • We meet and prepare for the meeting and make a list of the points you want raised at the IEP meeting.

  • Consider full inclusion or increased integration.

At the IEP Meeting:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions, make sure you understand the verbiage used at meeting.

  • We will discuss the present level of your child’s performance.

  • We will develop annual goals and either short-term objectives or a schedule of progress reports to monitor your child’s progress.

  • Identify full inclusion or integration opportunities and the supports needed for success

  • We will describe the placement for your child and identify specifically the supports and related services needed.

  •  You will sign the IEP only if you are satisfied.

After the IEP Meeting:

  • You may wish to consider a meeting with your child’s teacher’s at the beginning of the year - Be a classroom volunteer if possible and/or participate in school activities.

  • Support your child in developing friendships with his/her classmates.

  • Monitor your child’s progress and keep our office informed.

If you are dissatisfied with the services offered by your child’s school:

  • We can assist you in filing a Compliance Complaint, if the school district does not follow the rules or fails to provide services required in a signed IEP.

  • We can file for a Due Process hearing, if you and the school district cannot agree on the special education services appropriate for your child.
