Frequently Asked Questions

What does the term “Special Education” mean?

Special Education is specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a special education student and is provided at no cost to the parents or student. Special Education does not refer to a classroom. Special education is not a location or a place. It is a set of services provided to the child in the regular classroom or in other classrooms and/or settings outside the regular classroom if necessary.

When can Special Education Services begin for my child?

Generally, services begin at the age of 2 and continue until your child is 22 years old.

What is an "IEP"?

IEP stands for Individualized Education Plan. This is a plan that is developed by both the parents or guardians and school personnel to address the special education needs of a child. Once a child is deemed to meet the requirements within the definition of “child with disabilities” the school must develop an IEP that meets the educational needs unique to the “child with disabilities”.

What is IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)?

IDEA is a law that was passed to assist children and families in enforcing the rights of children with disabilities and Special Needs. IDEA gives parents care givers and guardians of children with disabilities and Special Needs the right to:
